#ThrowbackThursday: Taking a look back at July 2006! ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ๐Ÿ

This week, weโ€™re dusting off Issue 46 of the Solway Buzz from July 2006. Itโ€™s fascinating to look back at what was happening in our community almost 20 years ago!

Here are a few highlights from that issue:

  • Community Spirit: The front page featured a heartbreaking story on the “Desecration” of Holm Cultram Abbey following a fire, but showed the incredible community resilience in the aftermath.
  • Summer Fun: Residents were gearing up for the August Bank Holiday Silloth Carnival, which promised floats, entertainment on the Green, and displays by the Falcons Parachute Team and a Spitfire.
  • Live Music: The final heat of the Battle of the Bands was held in a packed Rugby Club, with FREEDOM to support THE DRIFTERS and AWOL from Maryport to support THE ANIMALS at the Silloth Music & Beer Festival in September.
  • Local Innovation: The Solway Buzz was already highlighting sustainability, reporting on the installation of a new plastic recycling facility on the Green following resident requests, and promoting a “Peatlands for People” project.
  • Inspirational Stories: Local brothers Ed and Will Stevens were featured for their “Tall Bike Tour of Britain,” riding specially built cycles 2 meters in the air to raise money for cycling charities!

Itโ€™s amazing to see how much has changed, yet how much of our community spirit remains the same.
