#ThrowbackThursday: Taking a look back at July 2006! 🗓️🐝
This week, we’re dusting off Issue 46 of the Solway Buzz from July 2006. It’s fascinating to look back at what was happening in our community almost 20 years ago!
Here are a few highlights from that issue:
- Community Spirit: The front page featured a heartbreaking story on the “Desecration” of Holm Cultram Abbey following a fire, but showed the incredible community resilience in the aftermath.
- Summer Fun: Residents were gearing up for the August Bank Holiday Silloth Carnival, which promised floats, entertainment on the Green, and displays by the Falcons Parachute Team and a Spitfire.
- Live Music: The final heat of the Battle of the Bands was held in a packed Rugby Club, with FREEDOM to support THE DRIFTERS and AWOL from Maryport to support THE ANIMALS at the Silloth Music & Beer Festival in September.
- Local Innovation: The Solway Buzz was already highlighting sustainability, reporting on the installation of a new plastic recycling facility on the Green following resident requests, and promoting a “Peatlands for People” project.
- Inspirational Stories: Local brothers Ed and Will Stevens were featured for their “Tall Bike Tour of Britain,” riding specially built cycles 2 meters in the air to raise money for cycling charities!
It’s amazing to see how much has changed, yet how much of our community spirit remains the same.
